In response to the confusion surrounding the revision of the guidelines published on April 10th, 2024, we would like to provide a detailed explanation.
■Revision Details
Guidelines on prohibited post content for Illustrations, Manga, Ugoira, and Other Images have been changed as follows.
[Before Revision]
・Real-life photographs or photo-realistic images that can be interpreted as sexual content.
[After Revision on April 10th, 2024]
・Real-life photographs or photo-realistic images.
■Reasons for this revision
The latter half of the sentence, “that can be interpreted as sexual content”, was deleted from the original guidelines to prohibit users from posting the following content:
1. Photo-realistic images that can be interpreted as sexual or cruel content based on context, even though at first they might not seem that way, regardless of how they are created.
・E.g.: Depictions of minors so photo-realistic that they could be mistaken for real persons, depictions of minors in swimsuits, diapers, etc.
2. Photo-realistic depictions intended to violate human rights, manipulate information, or cause chaos in society.
・E.g.: Images depicting actually-existing minors drinking, real politicians/celebrities being arrested, scenes of non-existent battlefields and disasters, solicitation of investment scams, etc.
pixiv has always considered these posts undesirable and dealt with them appropriately (e.g. deleting them) as soon as discovered. However, before the guidelines were revised, we did not have sufficient basis to justify our actions.
We have revised the guidelines to address a broader category, consistent with the action taken, and to prevent any new posts of this kind.
To keep things wholesome, we had no choice but to revise the guidelines to “Real-life photographs or photo-realistic images” to target a broader category.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
We have seen comments from our community questioning whether posts using art styles and techniques such as hyperrealism will also be prohibited. We decided to address this issue with this announcement to clear any possible doubts.
pixiv does not prohibit posts based on art styles and techniques such as hyperrealism, and as stated in our previous announcement, no changes have been made to how the prohibited posts are handled.
In order to prevent malicious acts testing the boundaries of the guidelines, we can’t disclose the specific criteria for determining whether or not a post violates the guidelines. However, we will continue to set standards to create a wholesome environment for everyone to enjoy.
